25_224_Garth_01_04_86 25 224 returns light engine along the Dovey valley after taking a breakdown, crane and support coach to Machynlleth on Tuesday 1st April 1986., The loco would last for another 5 weeks in service before being withdrawn at Crewe on May 8th.

25_224_Garth_01_04_86 A grab shot whilst out walking many years ago sees BR Sulzer Type 2 25 224 passing Garth on the approach to Machynlleth, hauling a breakdown crane & support coach on Tuesday 1st April 1986., The loco would soldier on for another 5 weeks in service before being withdrawn at Crewe on May 8th.

25_211_Machynlleth_29_05_86 Less than a month before being withdrawn, BR Sulzer Type 2 25 211 sits in the afternoon sunshine outside the remains of Machynlleth's former engine shed, whilst inside, BREL built Sprinter DMU 150 107 awaits it's next turn of duty on Thursday 29th May 1986., Built by BR Derby in 1965 as D7561, it was withdrawn at Crewe on June 27th & became the last class 25 to be scrapped when it was eventually cut up by MC Metal Processors, Glasgow, during July 1995.,

37_428_MadeleyJunction_30_06_86 The as yet unnamed 37 428 passes Madeley Junction hauling 7G19, the 1439 Coton Hill Yard - Bescot on Monday 30th June 1986., The English Electric Type 3 was delivered from the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows as D6981 in May 1965. Renumbered 37 281 in May 1974 under TOPS, it was renumbered 37 428 in February 1986 following overhaul at Crewe Works & was named 'David Lloyd George' at a ceremony in Pwllheli on May 16th 1987. It was scrapped in March 2013 by CF Booths of Rotherham.

97_405_Chester_17_05_86 Departmental loco 97 405, formerly 40 060, pauses at Chester with a civil, engineers on Saturday 17th May 1986.,  Built by English Electric, it entered service as D260 in February 1960 & was originally withdrawn in January 1985. It was then reinstated in April '85 as one of four class 40's used on engineering trains during remodeling work at Crewe, before being withdrawn a second time in March 1987. It was finally scrapped at Vic Berry's in March 1988, the only one of the four not to survive into preservation.

45_103_Chester_17_05_86 Sulzer Type 4 45 103 pauses at Chester with 1M63, the 1053 Scarborough - Holyhead on Saturday May 17th 1986., Built by BR's Crewe Works, it entered service as D116 in September 1961, was withdrawn in August 1988 & cut up by MC Processors, Glasgow in August 1990.

37427_Garth_01_08_87 37 427 'Bont Y Bermo' passes alongside the river Dyfi at Garth, on the approach to it's next stop at Machynlleth, with 1J24, the 0940 London Euston - Aberystwyth on Saturday 8th August 1987. The English Electric Type 3 was on it's second trip of the day, having had already worked the 0800 from Pwllheli to Shrewsbury earlier that morning., Built by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows, it entered service as D6988 on 14th June 1965, becoming 37 288 under TOPS in, March 1974. In September 1985 it entered Crewe Works for conversion to a ETH 37/4, emerging as 37 427 in February 1986. On 13th April 1986 it was named 'Bont Y Bermo' after arriving at Barmouth, along with 37 426, with a special charter to officially reopen Barmouth Bridge to loco hauled services. In March 1993 it was transferred to Inverness and in the May of that year it was renamed 'Highland Enterprise'. It was placed into storage in 2007 and was eventually scrapped at CF Booths, Rotherham in February 2013.,

37_426_504_Garth_28_06_86 1J20, the 0730 London Euston - Pwllheli, led by 37 426 'Y Llein Fach/Vale of Rheidol' & 37 504, crosses the river Dulas at Garth shortly before calling at Machynlleth on Saturday June 28th 1986., Both locomotives were built by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows., 37 426 entered service in August 1965 as D6999, was renumbered 37 299 in February 1974 under TOPS & became 37 426 in February 1986 after overhaul at Crewe BREL. After surviving for 9 years in storage, it was scrapped in March 2013 by CF Booths of Rotherham., 37 504 entered service as D6739 in May 1962. It became 37 039 in February 1974 under TOPS & was renumbered 37 504 in March 1986 following an overhaul. In May 1996 it was renumbered 37 603 & has seen use on the Cumbrian Coast passenger services as recently as 2015 & worked a Chester - Scarborough railtour on September 3rd 2016. It was placed in store by DRS on April 5th 2017.

47_523_MadeleyJunction_30_06_86 Brush Type 4 47 523 rejoins the mainline at Madeley Junction with MGR empties from Ironbridge Power Station heading for Littleton Colliery on Monday June 30th 1986., Built by BR Crewe, it entered service in November 1966 as D1106, was withdrawn in June 1999 & was scrapped at EWS Wigan in May 2000.

40_015_25_285_Crewe_12_08_86 English Electric Type 4 40 015 'Aquitania' & BR Sulzer Type 2 25 285, sit forlornly awaiting their fate in sidings at Gresty Lane, Crewe, on Tuesday 12th August 1986., Built by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, 40 015 entered traffic as D215 in June 1959, was withdrawn in November 1984 & was cut up at BREL Swindon in November 1986., 25 285 was built in Manchester by Beyer Peacock Ltd, entering service as D7635 in November 1965, was withdrawn in March 1986 & was scrapped in October 1987 by Vic Berry's, Leicester.

45_130_Crewe_12_08_86 BR Sulzer Type 4 45 130 departs the south end of Crewe on an unidentified working on Tuesday 12th August 1986., Built at Crewe Works in 1961, it entered service as D117 in September that year & remained in service for over 25 years until withdrawl in May 1987. It was scrapped by MC Metals of Glasgow in June 1993.

45_022_20_184_Crewe_12_08_86 BR Sulzer Type 4 45 022 'Lytham St. Annes' leads English Electric Type 1 20 184 south through Crewe station on Tuesday 12th August 1986., 45 022 was built by BR at Crewe Works & entered service as D60 in February 1962. It remained in service for just over 25 years, being withdrawn in, July 1987 & was cut up by MC Metals, Glasgow in October 1991., Built at EE's Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, 20 184 entered service as D8184 in December 1966, was withdrawn after almost 20 years service in October 1986 & was scrapped at Vic Berry's, Leicester in July 1988.

58_006_Crewe_12_08_86 BREL built Type 5 58 006 heads north through Crewe on a loaded MGR coal on Tuesday August 12th 1986., Built in Doncaster Works, it entered service in October 1983 & was withdrawn in January 2000. It is now in storage at Alizay, France after being exported in 2009 for use on civil engineering trains during the construction of high speed lines.

25_912_Crewe_12_08_86 BR Sulzer Type 2 25 912 'Tamworth Castle' pauses for a crew change at Crewe whilst hauling container flats from Holyhead to Derby on Tuesday 12th August 1986., Built by BR in Derby, it entered service as D7672 in February 1967 & became 25 322 under TOPS in 1973. It gained a reprieve from initial withdrawl when it was renumbered again in November 1985, becoming 25 912. It was eventually withdrawn a second time, after nearly 25 years in traffic in March 1991. Happily, it escaped the cutter's torch & is now preserved at the Churnet Valley Railway, although it is not operational at present.

D1062_Bridgnorth_11_10_86 D1062 'Western Courier' passes Bridgnorth Signal Box shortly before departing for Kidderminster on Saturday October 11th 1986., Built by BR at Crewe Works, it entered service in May 1963 & was withdrawn after just 11 years service in August 1974. Following withdrawl it was purchased by the Western Locomotive Association in November 1976 & has been based at the Severn Valley Railway since September 1978.

45_104_LlandudnoJunction_18_10_86 45 104 'The Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers' departs Llandudno Junction with 1E99, the 1112 Bangor - Newcastle on Saturday October 18th 1986., Built at Crewe Works, the BR Sulzer Type 4 entered service as D59 on February 6th 1962. It was renumbered under TOPS in April 1973 & remained in service until withdrawl on April 13th 1988. It was scrapped by MC Metals of Springburn, Glasgow, during February 1992., , "Explored" 09/12/17. D1062_Bewdley_11_10_86 'Western Courier' D1062 departs Bewdley with a Kidderminster to Bridgnorth service on Saturday October 1986., Built by BR at Crewe Works, it entered service in May 1963 & was withdrawn just 11 years later in August 1974. Following withdrawl it was purchased by the Western Locomotive Association in November 1976 & has been based at the Severn Valley Railway since September 1978.

5000_Bridgnorth_11_10_86 Ex LMS Stanier 'Black 5' No. 5000 departs Bridgnorth with a Kidderminster bound service on Saturday 11th October 1986., The 'Black 5' was the first one to be built at Crewe, entering traffic in March 1935 & remained in service until withdrawl by British Railways in October 1967. It was preserved as part of the National Collection & was based at the SVR between 1977 & 1991. It is now on static display at the NRM Shildon.

5000_HamptonLoade_28_09_86 Ex LMS Stanier 'Black 5' No. 5000 draws into Hampton Loade on a Bridgnorth - Kidderminster service, as an enthusiast on the other platform films it's arrival on the latest 'compact' video recorder on 28th September 1986., The 'Black 5' was the first one to be built at Crewe, entering traffic in March 1935 & remained in service until withdrawl by British Railways in October 1967. It was preserved as part of the National Collection & was, based at the SVR between 1977 & 1991. It is now on static display at the NRM Shildon.

47_xxx_Wem_04_10_86 An unidentified Class 47 trundles passed Wem Signal Box leading a lightly loaded southbound freight of steel coil on Saturday October 4th 1986., Built around 1882 to a LNWR design, Wem box was closed in October 2013, along with the others on the line between Shrewsbury & Crewe, after control of the route passed over to Cardiff SCC. It was demolished over the weekend of August 8th & 9th 2015.

47_647_Llandudno_18_10_86 1M58, the 0820 Newcastle - Llandudno, arrives at it's destination led by 47 647 'Thor' on Saturday October 18th 1986., Taken from the signal box, after being invited up by the signalman who'd seen me waiting to photograph it from the end of the platform, I'd actually set the road & signalled this into the station & spent an enjoyable couple of hours pulling levers & sending & answering bell codes, all under his close supervision. Quite an experience for a 15 year old!, Built at Crewe Works, the Brush Type 4 began it's career on April 24th 1965 as D1677 & was named 'Thor' in August 1966. It became 47 091 under TOPS in 1974, was renumbered again as 47 647 in April 1986 & in December 1989 it became 47 846., In May 2003 it was renumbered once more to 57 308 after being rebuilt & modified to become a General Motors powered class 57. It remains in service today with DRS.,

37198_431_Shrewsbury_04_07_87 English Electric Type 3 pair 37 198 & 37 431 'Sir Powys / County of Powys' wait to depart Shrewsbury with 1J20, the SO 0740 London Euston - Pwllheli on Saturday 4th July 1987., The last locomotive built at English Electric's Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn's Works, Darlington, entering service as D6898 in April 1964, it was renumbered to 37 198 under TOPS in February 1974. Despite being placed in storage by EWS in 1999 & then allocated for disposal in 2004, it entered preservation, with spells at both the Wensleydale & Dartmouth Railways before being purchased by Network Rail as a spare loco for the ERTMS Class 97/3 project. Whilst on loan to the Great Central Railway it was involved in an accident when it ranaway, unattended, for 1.8 miles, before crashing into a rake of coaches stabled just outside Loughborough Central station in May 2014. The damage sustained was significant enough to see it written off & it will now be used solely as a spares donor for the Class 97/3 ERTMS fleet., 37 431 entered traffic as D6972 upon release from EE's Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, in March 1965, becoming 37 272 under TOPS in March 1974. After overhaul & the fitting of ETH at Crewe Works, it was renumbered 37 431 in April 1986. It was withdrawn for component recovery by EWS in 1999 & was scrapped at Wigan CRDC in August 2000.

71000_BRELCrewe_04_07_87 BR Standard 8 No. 71000 'Duke Of Gloucester' on display at BREL Crewe Works open day on Saturday 4th July 1987., The Riddles designed 4-6-2, the only one of it's kind, was built at Crewe Works and was released to traffic in May 1954. It saw just 8 & a half years service before withdrawal in November 1962. It was purchased from Woodham Bros Scrapyard, Barry, in 1974 and after a complete overhaul and rebuild, including modifications to correct errors found in the design and construction, it returned, to steam at the Great Central Railway in 1986. It is currently undergoing another overhaul to return it to the mainline once more, which once completed will see it operated in conjunction with Vintage Trains, after an agreement was reached with the Tyseley based charter operator.

37901_Shrewsbury_08_08_87 37 901 'Mirlees Pioneer' pauses at, Shrewsbury with 6V39 Ravenscraig - Llanwern steel coils on Saturday 8th, August 1987., Built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry, it entered service as D6850 on July 1st 1963, becoming 37 150 under TOPS in 1974. In 1986 it was one of six Class 37s to be overhauled and fitted with new engines and generators for BR to evaluate for the proposed Class 38 heavy freight locomotive. Two were fitted with a Ruston power unit and were renumbered 37 905 and 906. 37 150 was one of the four that were fitted with an 8 cylinder 1800hp Mirlees power unit, emerging from Crewe Works as 37 901 in October 1986. Despite the Class 38 project coming to nothing, it remained in traffic until being withdrawn and placed into storage as unserviceable in November 1998. It was saved from scrapping in 2003 and spent time at the Llangollen Railway and the East Lancashire Railway during it's time in preservation. It is currently undergoing an overhaul to return it to mainline service with Europhoenix Locomotives UK.,

37429_Machynlleth_15_08_87 37 429 'Eisteddfod Genediaethol' arrives at Machynlleth hauling 1A44, the summer SO 0800 Pwllheli - London Euston on Saturday 15th August 1987., Built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, it entered service as D6600 on 26th August 1965 and became 37 300 under TOPS in November 1973. Following conversion to an ETH 37/4 at Crewe Works, it was renumbered 37 429 in March 1986 and was named 'Sir Dyfed/County of Dyfed' at Cardiff Canton on 2nd April 1987. This name was removed however in July and it was renamed 'Eisteddfod Genediaethol' in a ceremony at Porthmadog on 4th August 1987. After being withdrawn in October 2002, it was finally scrapped in February 2008 at EMR Kingsbury.

37003_426_Garth_15_08_87 37 003 and 37 426 'Y Lein Fach/Vale Of Rheidol' pass Garth on the approach to Machynlleth hauling 1J20, the summer SO 0740 London Euston - Pwllheli on Saturday 15th August 1987. , Both locomotives were built by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows. 37 003 entered service as D6703 on December 28th 1960, becoming 37 003 under TOPS in February 1974. It was stored as unserviceable in August 1994 but was purchased for preservation by the Class 37 Group in April 1998. Since then it has been in service at the Wensleydale, Weardale and Mid Norfolk Railways and is currently undergoing another overhaul at Leicester. , 37 426 entered service in August 1965 as D6999, was renumbered 37 299 in February 1974 under TOPS & became 37 426 in February 1986 following an overhaul and conversion to an ETH 37/4 at Crewe Works. It was named 'Y Lein Fach/Vale Of Rheidol' in a ceremony at Aberystwyth on Bank Holiday Monday 5th May 1987.
