Leicester (Vic Berrys scrapyard) M59406M M59405M condemned May 1985 Photo: Ivan Stewart Collection. Two 'Hadfield' DC units (M59406M & M59405) sit awaiting their fate at Vic Berrys scrapyard in Braunstone sidings Leicester in May 1985. Built in 1948 (but designed by the LNER) the 8 DC EMUs were part of a batch of 100 units built for DC electrification schemes. The other 92 were used on the Shenfield-Liverpool Street line, later converted to AC operation and classified as class 306. The 8 remaining 'Hadfield' units were introduced to service on the Hadfield, Glossop (and earlier Penistone) services in June 1954. After the route was converted to AC operation, the remaining class 506 sets were withdrawn in December 1984 and most ended up at Vic Berrys. M59604M however became preserved by the West Yorkshire transport museum and stored at Dinting and Bradford (Hammerton Street) before being resold and ending up at the Midland railway centre at Butterley. The condition of the unit at this stage was very poor and with a lack of support and money the unit reluctantly went for scrap at Booths yard in Rotherham in August 1995. A driving cab from the unit was however saved and can be seen at the Barrow Hill roundhouse.

Many of these units were stored for long periods and many locations on the Southern region before being sent for scrap. These units have obviously suffered from arson attacks whilst waiting final scrapping.
