25043 Speke Junction April 10th 1976 It April 16th 1976 and Speke Junction plays host to 25043, the last Class 25 in the solid green livery. It would be called to Derby Works during May 1976 for repair and a repaint into blue and yellow livery. It would be followed shortly by 25102 the last Class 25 to carry any type of green livery, in its case the two-tone green livery.

Classified repairs for the Type 2s had long since ceased so it was remarkable that 25035 should be accepted for repairs to the collision damage. Bescot allocated 25036 had only just been withdrawn, so it donated one of its cabs to the fortunate 25035. This gave 25035 an identity crisis as for a while at Derby it displayed two numbers, before visiting the paint shop. , , From a transparency by Mr A Healey.

47286 Beeston September 4th 1982 47286 passes through Beeston on September 4th 1982 with the 09.22 Derby - Skegness., , The industrial works on the right belonged to the Beeston Boiler Company and known locally as 'The Foundry'. Output included boilers, pipes, connections and cast iron valves. The site has now been levelled and residential housing built. The cement plant has also been demolished, but as of 2018 the site has not be redeveloped. The goods shed visible to the rear of the train still stands., , Original photographer unknown.

12:44:24 21/10/2019 		Missing/damaged buffers 47287 Crewe Works September 24th 1977 Visits to Crewe Locomotive Works were always an adventure. , , My first visit was about February 1972, no doubt taking the first service out of Derby to Crewe on a Sunday morning, hoping there were no delays since it was a mighty long walk from Crewe Station to the Works entrance., , Then there was the lengthy walk around the yards and shops before making the long trek back to the station. , , But the mix at Crewe Works was far different from my hometown Works at Derby. The multitude of Classes 20/37/40/47 and a cross section of the AC electrics and the occasional Class 76 certainly filled up the note book with numbers, whilst the photographs captured a whole range of subject matter., , Although this view dates from 1977, its typical of the oddities to be found about the Works, two locomotives with missing and/or damaged buffers., , And of course it was raining!, , Happy Memories.

13:51:30 06/01/2021 		20011 and Crane Derby Locomotive Works January 1990 Class 20 No.20011 and an unidentified rail mounted crane at Derby Locomotive Works during January 1990. , , 20011 was the last locomotive on the Works premises, being removed during February 1990 and then dumped at Etches Park for several more years until being taken away to MC Metals, Glasgow for scrapping., , 20011 had been used as an engine testbed during its final time at the Works, so it was unable to move itself. To overcome this problem of getting 20011 from the Shops to the Test House a withdrawn powered crane also on the premises was modified and put into service to move 20011 around., , Was this crane therefore the last powered rail vehicle in use at Derby Locomotive Works?, , Original photographer unknown.

D5283 Derby Shed March 4th 1967 ex-Brush Works, Loughborough D5283 alongside Derby shed on March 4th 1967., , The locomotive has been recently outshopped from Brush Works, Loughborough after accident repairs, along with D5021 & D5218. , , All received blue/yellow livery, though D5021 & D5218 were released with small yellow warning panels and the lion & wheel emblem., , Thus D5283 maybe the first Class 25 repainted in blue livery with full yellow ends., , It is also running with one of the engine room windows sheeted over. The window would later be refitted., , The headcode 1T38 suggests D5283 has recently had its acceptance trial on the mainline after release from Brush., , Original photographer unknown.

25015 & 45123 Derby Locomotive Works May 22nd 1976 25015 & 45123 'The Lancashire Fusilier' await attention at Derby Locomotive Works., , For 45123 the future remains bright as it will run for a further ten years. However for 25015 withdrawal came during December 1975 having sustained minor collision damage. No doubt it will provide spare parts for other member of the Class, prior to removal to Doncaster Works where it will be broken up during January 1977.

13:08:14 08/02/2022 		25180 Derby Locomotive Works July 22nd 1982 During July 1982 25180 was received at Derby Locomotive Works with minor damage to the No.2 cab. , , The locomotive was not dual braked and had received its last Classified repair in 1978. However repairs were carried out, By September 4th 1982 (the Works Open Day) the repairs had been completed, undercoat had been applied, just the yellow and blue topcoat was needed., , After release to traffic 25182 would remain in service for ten weeks before being withdrawn towards the end of November 1982., , From a photograph by J Glynn.

13:33:42 19/01/2023 		25261 Birmingham New Street July 31st 1976 25261 was a relatively early withdrawal (1981) but this didn't stop it from acquiring a few detail nuances whilst in service., , It was built with tablet catcher recesses, which like several others, it retained until withdrawn. , , Its last Classified repair took place at Crewe Works during January - April 1975, Crewe appears to have turned it out with white cab front handrails and it retained the raised 'L' shaped engine room roof towards the No.2 end. , , It had been received at Crewe Works in two-tone green livery, being one of a small group of Class 25s to carry TOPS numbering with green livery. , , It also got caught up in a cutting-up dispute at Derby Locomotive Works in May 1983 spending 30 months partially cut up until Vic Berry came in and finished off the job during November 1985.

As a spotter the line up of shunters was of great importance; were there any foreign shunters in the line, either ex-works or awaiting movement to the Works?, , On this day however wagon loads of limestone, from Wirksworth perhaps have obscured many of the shunter numbers. But it is offset by the presence of Clayton 8598 and one test coach., , Possibly taken on a Sunday morning when the London Road curve would have many locomotives parked.

Remarkably towards the end of its career it was transferred from Hasland to Swansea East Dock, and may have been at Derby for attention before heading west., , 47003 would be retired in 1964 after receiving damage in what might have been a hard shunt., , Original photographer unknown.

00/00/0002 		44006 Derby Works March 12th 1977 The end came for 44006 on December 13th 1976 whilst working the 21.36 Toton - Whitemoor freight. During shunting at Spalding the locomotive became derailed. After re-railing the next day 44006 was moved to March on December 20th, 44008 was sent down from Toton to collect 44006 on December 21st. Withdrawal came on January 25th and on February 2nd 44002 took 44006 to Derby Works. By early March 44006 had been broken up.

12002 Derby Works March 18th 1956 British Railways 0-6-0 diesel electric shunter No.12002 at Derby Locomotive Works on March 18th 1956., , Originally numbered 7079, it was built as a demonstrator by R&W Hawthorn Leslie & Co. Ltd, Newcastle under Lot 136 during 1934., , 7079 was powered by an English Electric 6K 300bhp diesel engine, coupled to an English Electric transmission., , It was taken into LMSR stock in December 1936 and would spend nearly 20 years allocated o Crewe South. , , It was broken up at Derby Locomotive Works during September 1956., , Ten very similar shunters were built by RSH, Newcastle under Lot 135, numbered 7069 - 7078., , Most of these ended up in War Department service, however 7074 & 7076 returned to the LMSR and were renumber ed 12000 & 12001 respectively. These two also spent most of their working lives at Crewe South., , Original photographer unknown.
