The Coker-Coaler This tour visited many freight lines in the North Derbyshire/Souh Yorkshire that are not there today, long since disused and lifted, Harworth, Rossington, Bentley and Grimethorpe collieries were visited along with the Monk Bretton branch to the glass works, 37422 was the main tour loco, with assisting loco 37514 Derby back to Sheffield., , 6th March 1993

97561 Coalville Open Day, this year, 1989 marked the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Midland Counties Railway between Nottingham and Derby. As part of the celebrations to commemorate this anniversary, a Class 47/4 locomotive 97561 (D1614, 47034, 47561) was painted in special livery and appropriately named "Midland Counties 150 1839-1989", shortly after this picture was taken she was renumbered again to 47973., New to Worcester as D1614 in 9/64 withdrawn 08/96 cut up 03/97 at Crewe Works by MRJ Philips, , 11th June 1989

47463 On last day of timetabled locomotive hauled service trains on the 'Hope Valley' route, class 47/4 locomotive 47463 (D1586) is seen approching Buxworth cutting with a Liverpool Lime Street-Sheffield working, the following day the new timetable came into operation with Class 156 ‘SuperSprinter’ units operating the new Liverpool-Norwich services., New to Cardiff  5/64 as D5679 withdrawn from Crewe 04/95 cut up 11/96 at Crewe Works by MRJ Phillips, , , 15th May 1988.

Two Cabs The remains of two Derby built class 25 locomotives 25126  (D5276) and 25201 (D7551) lie amongst the rubble in the Leicester scrapyard of Vic Berry., 25126 was new to Nottingham as D5276 on 5/6/64 withdrawn from Crewe 11/82, On the 22/6/84 she was towed along with 25134, 25158 and 25208 to Swindon works for scrapping, but the works closed before 25126 was scrapped., 25201 was also new to Nottingham as D7551 on 19/6/65 withdrawn 28/1/87 from Crewe , , 20th December 1987

10713 InterCity Sleeper (SLE) Mk3a 10714 a 1983 product of the Derby Carriage and Wagon Works, a total of 208 of these carriages were built, but by the end of the 80's the overnight sleeper sevices, apart from the Caledonian and the Night Riviera had all but disappeared, quite a number like this one on the Severn Valley Railway, have wound up on Heritage Railways providing accommodation for volunteers., , 21st February 2015

Shirebrook Junction A Derby Heavyweight class 114 dmu crosses Shirebrook Junc on the freight only line, with one of the Worksop-Shirebrook-Worksop Open Day shuttles., This line that the train is on reopened to passengers as a through route again between Nottingham and Worksop in 1998 and is branded as the Robin Hood Line, the line off to the right lead eventually to High Marnham Power station, as well as serving the many many collieries on the way, which have now all gone., , 5th June 1987

On Shed At the end of 1986 just 26 class 25 locomotives remained in service including these two, 25201 (D7551) withdrawn 28/01/87 and 25278 (D7628) which made it to the last day, the 27/03/87, and into preservation, incidentally she was the last of her class to receive a classified repair at Derby Locomotive Works, seen  inside Crewe Diesel Depot., , 19th October 1986

Freight Engines Doncaster 1984 built class 58 freight locomotive 58014 stands next to a Midland Railway 0-6-0, 4F freight engine at Mantle Lane sidings at Coalville., 4027 was built at Derby Works and entered traffic in November 1924. It became 44027 under the British Railways re-numbering scheme and was withdrawn in November 1964, it is now part of the National Collection belonging to the National Railway Museum.,  , 1st September 1985

DM 5103 Metropolitan Line A60 Stock DM 5103 built by Cravens of Sheffield, is seen on the traverser within the confines of London Transports Acton Works, on the occasion of the Open Day., The A60 & A62 Stock lasted in passenger service till September 2012, when replaced by the new S Stock built by Bombardier at Derby., The A Stock originally comprised of 468 cars and were unique for London Underground as they were the only trains fitted with luggage racks with umbrella hooks., , 2nd June 1983

25257 BR Derby Works 1966 built class 25/3 locomotive 25257 (D7607), a locomotive that was withdrawn three times and reinstated twice, captured here after being withdrawn twice already, 25257 would be reinstated for the last time in the following July seeing out another sixteen months service. , Today we were travelling behind 40028 (D228) on the 'Railway Enthusiasts Society' the "South Yorkshireman" and the entire train was bused to/from Attenborough station for a depot visit here at Toton., , 1st April 1984

Aberdare Looking north along the disused freight only line towards Tower Colliery at Hirwaun 2 miles further on, the building on the right is the old Aberdare station which was opened in 1851 by the Great Western Railway, on the Neath to Pontypool Line and was last used on 13th June 1964, when this line closed to passengers,, The new Aberdare station where i'm standing was opened to passengers on the 3rd October 1988, with the last coal trains passing through to Hope cement works in Derbyshire in May 2017., Taken whilst traveling on the excellent value for money £13 'Explore Cardiff & Valleys' Rail Ranger, this is one of the places i had never been to before and will probably never go back too., ,  28th March 2019

D832 Former British Railways Western Region Type 4 ‘Warship’ class diesel-hydraulic locomotive number D832 ONSLAUGHT stands in the shed at Bury Baron Street on the East Lancashire Railway. ,  D832 was built at British Railways Swindon works in 1961 being withdrawn from Laira  Depot on 16th December 1972, and was moving on the 10th January 1973 to the Railway Technical Centre at Derby for departmental use.,  D832 arrived on the East Lancashire Railway by rail in February 1981, Taken whilst participating on an excellent driver experience day on the East Lancashire Railway.  , , 23rd March 2019

Dinting Railway Centre Hudswell Clarke (Leeds) 1938 built 0-6-0 side tank 1704 "Nunlow", which spent it's whole working life untill 1968 at Earle’s cement works at Hope in Derbyshire, a place that it has since returned to in 2005, 2008 and 2014 for public open days., Not long after entering preservation 1704 is seen at the Dinting Railway Centre nr Glossop., Situated on the site of Dinting engine shed (39A) built by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway in 1898, becoming the Dinting Railway Centre in 1969 closing it's doors to the public in 1990, today (April 2020) the site is overgrown and derelict., , 5th April 1969

Pioneering Diesels These 2 pioneers of diesel traction were two of a kind being designed and built by the LMS at Derby Works in 1947, they were delivered to British Railways Camden depot 10000 12/47 and 10001 7/1948, with both being withdrawn from Willesden 10000 12/63 and 10001 3/66., 10000 & 10001 are captured here heading north on the WCML between Lancaster and Carnforth at Hest Bank., , July 1958

Chesterfield At end of our day class 20 locomtives 20057 (D8057),  & 20154 (D8154) stand at Chesterfield (18.26), as they head onto Derby with the Worksop Open Day Committee 'The Worksop Whistler'., The tour visited Bolsolver Coalite, Welbeck Colliery, Bilsthorpe Colliery, High Marnham and Bevercotes Colliery, along with a whole host of connecting lines and junctions which are history now, victims of the declining coal traffic and pit closures these destinations are now lost to railways., , 28th June 1992

Chapel Milton Viaducts The Midland Railways 1867 and 1890 built Chapel Milton Viaducts are now Grade II listed bifurcated railway viaducts, straddling the Black Brook valley in Chapel Milton and also passes over the early 1796 industrial Peak Forest Tramway on which i'm walking on., Originally built to carry express trains from Manchester Central to London St Pancras including the iconic Midland Pullman, the viaducts now carries the freight only lines transporting limestone from the quarries and works from in and around the Buxton area., , 17th July 2021

Cheddleton Class 25 locomotive 25322 sits in a siding at Cheddleton next to the station on the Churnet Valley Railway, looking like it's not been used in a long time and unlikely to be used anytime soon., Having already been withdrawn twice already in January 1984 and again in March 1987, this class 25 locomotive 25322 'Tamworth Castle' (25912, D7672) outlived the official class 25 withdrawal date of March 23rd 1987 on British Rail by 4 years, it's last duty being "The Rat Requiem" railtour from Holyhead to Leeds on the 30th March 1991, and in doing so brought to an end the reign of the class on British Rail., In total 327 locomotives were built between 1961 and 1967, at BR workshops at Derby, Darlington and at Beyer Peacock in Gorton., , 19th February 2023
