In 1986 it was one of six Class 37s to be overhauled and fitted with new engines and generators for BR to evaluate for the proposed Class 38 heavy freight locomotive. Two were fitted with a Ruston power unit and were renumbered 37 905 and 906. 37 150 was one of the four that were fitted with an 8 cylinder 1800hp Mirlees power unit, emerging from Crewe Works as 37 901 in October 1986. Despite the Class 38 project coming to nothing, it remained in traffic until being withdrawn and placed into storage as unserviceable in November 1998. It was saved from scrapping in 2003 and spent time at the Llangollen Railway and the East Lancashire Railway during it's time in preservation. It is currently undergoing an overhaul to return it to mainline service with Europhoenix Locomotives UK.,
