English Electric Type 3 pair 37 198 & 37 431 'Sir Powys / County of Powys' wait to depart Shrewsbury with 1J20, the SO 0740 London Euston - Pwllheli on Saturday 4th July 1987., The last locomotive built at English Electric's Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn's Works, Darlington, entering service as D6898 in April 1964, it was renumbered to 37 198 under TOPS in February 1974. Despite being placed in storage by EWS in 1999 & then allocated for disposal in 2004, it entered preservation, with spells at both the Wensleydale & Dartmouth Railways before being purchased by Network Rail as a spare loco for the ERTMS Class 97/3 project. Whilst on loan to the Great Central Railway it was involved in an accident when it ranaway, unattended, for 1.8 miles, before crashing into a rake of coaches stabled just outside Loughborough Central station in May 2014. The damage sustained was significant enough to see it written off & it will now be used solely as a spares donor for the Class 97/3 ERTMS fleet., 37 431 entered traffic as D6972 upon release from EE's Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, in March 1965, becoming 37 272 under TOPS in March 1974. After overhaul & the fitting of ETH at Crewe Works, it was renumbered 37 431 in April 1986. It was withdrawn for component recovery by EWS in 1999 & was scrapped at Wigan CRDC in August 2000.
