08 856 on Crewe Station south end van pilot duty. 1986.
Standing in the bay platforms in the early hours 08 856 is seen stood with a rake of GUV and BG vans being loaded with mail for attachment to a northbound service., , 08 856 at the time was allocated on paper to Chester having formerly been a Crewe Diesel depot allocated shunter but I suspect the move never took place on the official date, by May 1987 it had moved again to Allerton on Merseyside. 08 856 was also the last locomotive to recieve a classified overhaul at Derby Locomotive Works in 1988 and carried plates to that effect. It survived into the privatisation era as an EWS machine but caught fire in 2000 when allocated to Cardiff Canton and spent time laid up. Repairs were carried out but by April 2004 the loco was stored unserviceable again and the end came in December 2011 when it was cut up at T.J. Thompsons scrapyard in Stockton.
